Sujoy Ghosh returns with this product and his re-entry is welcomed by the cinegoers. The luminous filmmaker enticed the viewers with his unique subject in Jhankar Beats and the film did well among the audiences. But he could not raise the spirits of the cinema lovers with other flicks – Home Delivery and Aladin. Now he makes comeback with the recent released ‘Kahaani’. The movie’s promotion was done handsomely and Sujoy took the advantage of Vidya Balan’s current worth in the industry and among the viewers post the brilliantly successful The Dirty Picture. There is no doubt that Ghosh’s Kahaani is taking the positive edge of Vidya Balan’s importance and likeability. But we cannot say that Sujoy’s Kahaani is brilliant just because of the presence of Balan – no, this is not the scene at all. Ghosh’s Kahaani is a well-made, well-scripted and laced with classy performances flick that is potentially a classy finished good to buy ticket for.
Bollywood is fast changing and keeps on experimenting new things and ideas. It is simply wonderful – an entertainment industry has to keep changing and brining new ideas. Bollywood industry is largely famous for its male-centric films though in between we witness women-centric flicks as well. But the main focus of a Hindi film is a male hero. The time is now changing with new advents of concepts in films such as the flicks with serious subjects (as we used to see in old parallel cinema, which has vanished from the scene or if exists, it does not show its existence at all – commercial films have overcome the scenario) and women-oriented themes have started appearing in Bollywood. This is a cool breeze, one loves to breathe in.
Vidya Balan’s choice of films is really applaudable and this is what has put her on the scene of mammoth success today. Just glance at her career graph, the films like Parineeta, Paa, Ishqiya, No One Killed Jessica, The Dirty Picture and the current Kahaani – all focus on women.
Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani is laced with an authoritative central character that is appealing and instantly grows with the viewer. The story and the script of the movie are commanding and convincing. Sujoy is a brilliant storyteller and he gets the viewer glued to the screens till the finale.
Vidya Bagchi (Vidya Balan) lands in Kolkata from London to trace her missing husband. She is seven months pregnant and finds herself all alone in the festive city. With nothing to rely on, Bagchi begins with the search of her husband in the city. Everyone out there tries to convince Vidya that her husband does not exist but she is adamant to find him. She moors the belts to unzip the truth about her missing husband.
The concept is simply unique and appreciable. A woman, who is pregnant and going to be a mother, finds her husband missing at this crucial stage and she then arrives in the city and starts searching for him among the hefty crowds and witnesses the troublesome life experiences, etc – bringing this concept on celluloid simply deserves claps.
Sujoy Ghosh is a luminous director. His effort to make the human saga into a thriller is superlative. Writing (credits: Sujoy Ghosh, Advaita Kala – additional screenplay credits: Suresh Nair, Nikhil Vyas) is breath-arresting and captures the souls.
Cinematography by Setu is a work of art. It is simply a magnum opus. The city life of Kolkata has been captured with finesse. Editing deserves distinction marks. Music by Vishal-Shekhar is spongy and classy. You would love to listen it time and again.
Vidya Balan very aptly fits to the expectations of her fans. Post The Dirty Picture, Vidya needed to have another good material where she could flaunt her true acting skills and Kahaani gave her the platform. She essays the role of a pregnant woman with super class. Vidya, get ready to fetch more awards for your marvelous performance in Kahaani. Parambrata Chattopadhyay enacts the part luminously. Nawazuddin Siddiqui portrays the role with aplomb. Dhritiman Chatterjee is in his usual elements. Rest of the cast enacts the part well.
Final Verdict by the Critic:
Kahaani is a well-made film with attention-grabbing script, marvelous performances and above all Vidya Balan’s well-delivered and award-winning act as a pregnant woman. Do watch it. Kahani 2012 Movie Official Trailer
